Duolingo Feature

Creating and mapping a new feature for DUOLINGO

Project

UX

Context

Own study exercise

Problem

First, users do not complete the modules because there is no human interaction. Advanced users say what they learn is not what they hear in real life. Lastly, the absence of set times to study directly influences user engagement

Process

The Duolingo brand is already engaging with the music community #DulaPeep. This was the starting point of the feature. Next to that, a mapping of existing feature was done, both in pro and free versions. An initial interaction map was made, to see how the proposed feature would interact with other components, users, and finally the system. Some branding elements were recreated, to match the existing Duolingo design system, and the feature was integrated using existing components.

Solution

The proposed solution comes in the form of a lyrics feature. This can be a collaboration between Duolingo and a music streaming service that can provide top songs & their lyrics. By adding real voices, human interaction will be increased. Advanced users will hear more usual phrases or expressions, closer to what they actually hear in real life. Next, due to set times of 1-2 months of popular songs, user engagement should see an increase.

Some Lessons & Future Developlment

Although confirmed in other studies, the feature metrics should be followed in order to confirm the hypotheses. In terms of product, other issues should be checked, such as: the problem of idioms and accents being particular only to specific areas, lycensing problems for the limited timeframes, and the perception of human interaction.
